Smoking associated with reduced odds of Sjögren’s syndrome among rheumatoid arthritis patients

Sjӧgren’s syndrome (SS) is a systemic autoimmune disease with characteristic features of dry eye and dry mouth. Overlap SS is common among RA patients, but the relative impact of risk factors for overlap disease are unknown. This study from HIP Investigator Dr. Christie Bartels analyzed the association between smoking and SS in a large population-based RA cohort in Wisconsin.

The objective of this study was to determine the association between smoking status and having SS among RA patients. Using cross-sectional data from a large population-based sample, the study observed an inverse association between current smoking and SS among patients with RA.
